Increased
financial discipline and prudence. PJIAE President drs. Eugene
Holiday says that these are elements of paramount importance if
PJIAE is to successfully navigate its way through the financial and
economic turbulence projected for the recession expected during the
coming 12 to 18 months.
“The worsening global financial and economic crises, as evidenced by
increasing bankruptcies and job losses in the US and Europe. These
developments mean that 2009 will see reduced travel and thus less
income for PJIAE and the economy of St. Maarten,” he predicted.
Addressing workers at the traditional Christmas party on December
20, 2008, drs. Holiday said 2009 will be a
“dauntingly challenging” year, and implored all to individually take
a closer look at their personal situation and make adjustments to
cope with the expected new and less favorable economic realities of
2009 and possibly part of 2010.
He characterized 2008 as a historic and transformational year, listing record high
oil prices, the beginning of a global recession, the election of
Barack Obama as America’s first black president, St. Maarten’s quest
to become country reaching the final phase and the celebration of PJIA’s 65th anniversary.
Hinting that the nature and extend of these
changes varies, he said that 2009 will bring far reaching changes
internationally and locally and that all have a role to play in
preparing to soften their impact.
The PJIAE President called for continued commitment to PJIAE’s
mission to be A Regional Leader. He stated: “I specifically call on
you in 2009 to note the following: If you are called upon to act,
think not on how much effort it will cost you, but rather on how
much it will benefit us collectively in the long run. That is our
challenge for 2009. A challenge I am sure we will meet head-on,
individually and collectively. It is only thanks to that kind of
commitment that we were able to celebrate our 65th anniversary.”
He said that PJIAE, as one of St. Maarten’s most senior corporate
citizens has the responsibility and obligation to lead the way in
helping to secure the economic viability of St. Maarten and stressed
that despite the challenges, he remained optimistic. “If past
achievements are any indication of future performance, I believe
that we have a solid foundation to face the challenges ahead”.
drs. Holiday said all must maintain the sense of belief in the
collective self, because it is because of that, that PJIAERS could
stand still and join together to celebrate a successful 2008.
“Successful thanks to the continued input and effort of the
employees of PJIAE. Without the daily contribution of every single
one of you, our company would not be what it is, that is: “A
Regional Leader in Providing Airport Services”,” he said, extending
sincere appreciation and congratulations to all for their
contribution and input in 2008.
